This very adaptable shade tree is fast growing and hardy with an interesting and irregular growth habit.

  • Oval to round habit
  • More vigorous and heat resistant than other Norway maples
  • Green-yellow fall foliage

Plan carefully when choosing a site for this magnificent tree because it will take ownership very seriously as will its future generations.  Tolerates city conditions but needs good soil and protection from wind in colder climates. Best in eastern and central Kansas.

Height: 40-50 ft
Spread: 35-50 ft
Zone: 4-7
Color: Green, Yellow

Interesting Notes about Norway Maple:

The Norway Maple is unsurprisingly a non-native tree, but is a popular shade tree similar to the Sugar Maple. It tolerates poor soils, resists wind and ice damage, plus it can handle pollution. The one negative is that it has roots that tend to grow very close to the soil surface, which is important because these are feeder roots. These roots and the overall size of the tree will eventually dissuade other plants from growing beneath the tree. The tree does produce fruit which are referred to as samaras (or helicopters) that mature in fall.
