Best grown as an annual, Perilla is used as both a filler plant in flower beds and container gardens, but is can also be used as a salad herb. Fresh leaves are harvested for used in Asian cooking, salads, soups and as a garnish. If plant is brought inside before the first frost it can be overwintered and added to the indoor herb garden. If grown in full sun the leaves turn a very dark red and it is those leaves that give purpose to the common name, Beefsteak Plant.
