Technically Bluebeard is a shrub, but if in areas where there are harsh winters it is referred to as a sub-shrub because the stems do not survive, only the roots. New stems will give rise from the roots in the spring and since flowering occurs on new growth the plant will produce beautiful flowers without a pause.
