Interesting Notes about Shumard Oak:
A stately tree with beautiful summer and fall foliage plus it is adaptable to tough growing conditions, but is intolerant of alkaline soils due to susceptibility to chlorosis. This tree has the potential for a very long life which is good because acorns are generally not produced until the tree is at least 20 years old. The acorns provide food for wildlife and are poisonous to humans if eaten before toxins are leached out by boiling.
