Ideal on its own or as an accent in a shrub border of by house foundations, plus it can be planted in hedge formation. Will grow best in eastern and central Kansas.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Penny Mac'
Bigleaf Hydrangea
Hydrangea with large flowers that bloom all summer and are either pink or blue depending on soil pH.
- Mophead flowers on new and old wood
- Tight growth habit
- Blue flowers in acidic soils; pink flowers in alkaline
Height: 4-6 Feet
Spread: 4-6 Feet
Zone: 5-9
Interesting Notes about Bigleaf Hydrangea:
In high pH soils, flowers will be pink rather than blue. This is tied to the availability of aluminum in the soil (less availalbe in high pH soil - almost all of Kansas), which is needed to develop the blue pigment. Treatments to change flower color must be applied well before flower development.
