Kansas Roots

Great Plants for Our Great State

Welcome!

Kansas Roots is designed to help you select plants best suited to our challenging Kansas environment. From East to West and North to South our climate varies greatly in annual rainfall, winter temperatures, wind, heat, drought and soil quality. This tool will assist as you navigate the garden center in search of the perfect plants for your garden. Simply browse the plant lists or use the search function to select plants that fit your unique needs and interests.

The purpose of this site is to curate ALL of our K-State recommended plants in one place where you can plan ahead of time or search on your mobile device while you are shopping. Links to the print publications for our recommended plants can be found at the top of the Plant Lists page.

Annual and perennial plants listed here have all been tested and approved as part of our Kansas State University Prairie Star Flowers research trial program. Our main trial site is in Olathe at the Horticulture Research & Extension Center (35230 W. 135th, Olathe, Kansas). There are also research and demonstration gardens throughout the state, most often at local county K-State Research and Extension offices (find yours here).
